What is bell tent?
bell tent is a human shelter for inhabiting, traveling or leisure. The design is a simple structure, supported by a single central pole, covered with cotton canvas. The stability of the tent is reinforced with tension by guy ropes connected around the top of the walls and being held down by pegs around the circumference to the ground. It has a circular floor plan of some 16ft and larger.
About the size (L*W*T/wall tall) 3m: 300x300x200/60cm 4m: 400x400x250/60cm 5m: 500x500x300x80cm
6m: 600x600x350x80cm
Other info:
Cotton shrinks when wet, making itself waterproof when it rains. The first time your tent gets wet it may leak a little,do not worry THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL! Once it dries out for the first time that shrinkage closes up any little holes to ensure it will not happen again.
The canvas has been impregnated to protect it from dirt, ultraviolet radiation and fungus. This makes it mould-resistant but not mould-proof.If the canvas remains damp,in a place where mould can grow, eventually mould will grow.If you put your tent in a damp corner of garden, next to a hedge,or under a tree long term it will eventually get mould(as would a car or anything left there). Therefore it is worth considering the right spot that has some ventilation ,as mould is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
Advantages of a cotton canvas tent:
-Strong
-Breathing and humidity -regulating
Disadvantages of cotton canvas tent:
-Dries slowly
-Sensitive for dirt and fungus
Maintenance:
-The cotton must be bone dry before storing the tent
-Never keep the tent stored away wet for longer than two days, otherwise fungus can affect the canvas which will then create permanent little black dots.
-The canvas has been impregnated with anti-fungi and made waterproof that is effective for up to 60 weeks of use. Once used past this period of camping you may need to re-proof certain areas that appear more translucent.
-Dust and dried mud is best removed once the canvas is dry by brush like a floor scrubbing brush.
Lifespan:
The lifespan of your tent is very dependent upon camping conditions - air pollution, ultraviolet radiation, natural, dirt(bird, droppings, sand, salt, water)and, domestic, dirt(cooking, stains, soda, wine, sun cream)as these all limit the lifespan of you cotton canvas tent. The canvas or your tent should be good for over 60 weeks of outdoor usage if cared for correctly.
Zippers:
Zippers sometimes have to endure extreme tension caused by wind, incorrect tent set ups or pressures caused by people objects leaning into the tent.In order to limit damage to any zippers:
-Close all zippers before setting up your tent.
-Handle them with care.
-To protect the zippers, treat them with silicones once in a while.
-Verify zippers before setting up your tent as there is no insurance on them after use.
Fungus and stains:
With insufficient ventilations, fungus can affect the canvas. It is important to store your tent dry so no fungus or other stains can appear. If you have to store the tent wet temporarity,be sure to remove the mud and dirt from the bottom of the tent put your tent back out to dry within 48 hours.
In order to limit fungus and stains on your tent:
-Store your tent 100% dry
-When dealing with fungus, use a soft brush or sponge and a lot of fresh water.
-Only use specialised tent cleaning product to remove difficult stains.Other chemical products can cause the cotton to leak.We suggest you have your tent re-impregnated with waterproof on any area has been cleaned using a cleaning product.
Leaking:
Cotton can, when new,let some air through and leak around the seams. After the canvas has been wet once this will no longer happen because of the cotton expanding.Very light stains can appear on a wet tent, however these stains cause no problems.
In order to present your tent water resistance and prolong its lifespan after a considerable amount of use,the outside of canvas can be re-treated with a sealant. There are many good spay can sealants on the market, and as mentioned,we also sell re-proofer.

4 metre or 5 metre bell tent? Size Guide for your choice
Sizes compared
On paper a 5 metre bell tent only appears to be slightly larger than a 4 metre. There is however a big difference in the square meter / square footage of the tents.
Bell tents are (almost) a circle so the area is determined by the radius rather than the width.
Areas
4 metre area = 12.5664 m2 / 139.934 ft2
5 metre area = 19.635 m2 / 213.41 ft2
A 5 metre bell tent is therefore 56.25% larger than a 4 metre.
To put this in real terms you could:
In a 4 metre accommodate 2 double mattresses and still have room for a living/luggage area.
In a 5 metre comfortably have 3 double mattresses and still have a lot of room for a living/luggage area at the front or have 4 double mattresses without a living area.
4 Metre bell tent with two standard, double air beds with living/lounge area at front.
5 metre bell tent with 3 double air beds and Large living/lounge area at front (or have 4 double air beds with no area at front)
Weights
The 4 metre bell tent net weight (weight with packaging etc) is 26 kg with a gross weight 25 kg (our bell tents are heavier than the average due to our heavy duty poles and pegs and also our additional set of stake pegs for the elastic loops)
The 5 metre bell tent has a net weight of 35 kg with a gross weight of 34 kg
A four metre weighs 9 kg less than the 5 metre so it is quite a bit easier to carry.
Pros/Cons
4 Metre
Lighter to carry (9kg less weight makes a lot of difference)
More stable in heavy winds (our super thick poles/extra pegs/strong guys also help)
Easier to heat and stay warm (extend the camping season into the winter months)
Faster to set up
Easier to store
Less money
More practical on campsites with small pitch sizes
5 Metre
More room!
So which size?
Of course its all a personal choice what size you go for, but as a general rule:
If you are regularly sleeping two people, and occasionally four, a 4 metre may be better suited because it takes less time to set up , it is less expensive, packs down smaller and it is lighter to carry.
If regularly sleeping 4 + people, or if you are planning on going on extended week long + camping trips where set up time/carry weight is not such an issue, a 5 metre may be better suited as it gives you that extra room.
If regularly sleeping 3 people either size is fine. However, on balance a 5 metre may be better suited as I would suggest that having slightly more space than you need is not a bad situation to be in.
